A clinical & Statistical Study of Epilepsy


Abstract
A clinical and statistical study was done against all epileptic patient who visited and recieved ambulatory
treatment at out patient clinic of neuropsychiatry department of Seoul National Universty Hospital from Apr. 15, 1954 to Sep. 30, 1961.
1) Frequency of epilepsy : The number of all patients ¢¥who visited neuropsychiatry department during that time 11,571 and epileptic patients were 779. The rate is 6.7%.
2) Between the age of 16 to 20, the incidence are most common, on the point of the age of onset.
3) On sexual difference, males are over 2 times more than female, though usually there is no difference in sex.
4) On character and body type, epileptoid character were common, but no specific findings on body type.
5) In.21 patients, mental disturbance were noted, congenital or acquired.
6) 6 cases had inadequate occupation that might hurt others, like driver and barber. `
7) On anamnesis, 166,2 cases (20.8%) had recognizable past history that might have some ¢¥relation with epilepsy.
8) 61 cases (7.8%) had familiar relation of epilepsy.
9)¢¥194 cases (25%) had various Aura.
Foaming and salivation ; 317 cases.
Incontinance, urinary et fecal; 170 cases.
The most common type of convulsion were tonic and clonic type.
36 cases recieved trauma during their seizure. The state of consciousness; complete loss of consciousness were most common, 92.2%
Tongue biting ; 115 cases.
Terminal sleeping ; 224 cases.
The cases whose convulsion started from one part of the body and spread to other part or generalized
were 103 cases.
The cases whose seizure persisted for 2 minutes to 5 minutes were most common. In 63.2%, seizure occured during the night only.
10) Clinical types:
Grandmal 70.1% Gm + Pm 5.1%
Petitmal 10.6% Gm + Psych. S. 2.3%
Psychomotor Seizure 4.3% Gm + Pm + Psych. S. 0.3%
Jacksonian type 7.3%
11) During the course of disease including medication, 22 cases showed the change of its clinical type.
12) Among 64 cases who were checked "E.E.G., Localized unilateral type were 36 cases, diffuse and
bilateral synchronous type were 23, and normal were 5 cases.
13) After medication, controled patient were 110 cases (14.1%). reduced were 54 cases (6.9%)r and no
response were 22(2.8%)
14) Patients who had been .treated .for over 2 years ambulatory were only 9.2%
